All Ranges Match
Saturday 20 April 2024
On Saturday 20th April 2024 the All-Ranges Competition was held on the Denwood ranges, to launch this year’s outdoor season.
A total of forty-four shooters entered this event, two withdrew due to their circumstances on the day, so forty-two took part on a typically chilly, breezy April day at Denwood (the sun appeared for about half an hour in the early afternoon!)
With a good team of helpers assisting - Range conducting officers, scorers, a stats officer, and many of the competitors - the first details started promptly at 9:30am. Shooting carried on through the day until the last detail ended just before 5:00pm.
It was good to see this event fulfilling the purposes it was designed for: -
To introduce “indoor” shooters to the outdoor experience: around 14 of the entrants had never previously shot outdoors.
To hold an Inter-regional competition – teams from Grampian and from Lothian took part.
Along with “local” shooters from around Grampian region it was good to see several “Fifers” and a strong contingent travelling from the Lothians – Edinburgh University, George Watson’s and George Heriot’s schools were all represented.
The event included a mix of competitions indoor at 25yds, and outdoors at 50 metres and 100yds.
The individual competition was held in classes. Due to low entries on previous occasions, I had taken the decision to rationalise the classes by reducing the options to 4 (A, B,C and D) instead of 5 as was the case in earlier years.
On the evening before the competition, it became obvious that “D” class was heavily subscribed so (thanks to some last-minute adjustments by Jim Ward to the software program) we reinstated class “E”.
This gave a better overall balance to the event – many thanks are due to Jim for his contributions to the setting up and running of the control program, which was originally developed by Bill Hamilton.
In addition to individual events, there were pairs competitions, club team of three (handicapped) competitions, and inter-regional competitions to be competed for – all shot concurrently with the individual cards.
There were also medals for the leading woman, the leading junior and the leading veteran.
At the end of the day the Scottish Target Shooting (STS) Vice Chairman, Ian Thomson, presented medals to the successful shooters – and the Bob Normand Cup to the Grampian Inter-regional team, who won the “Double Dewar” outdoor event.
Grampian beat the Lothian team by a comfortable margin, but the Lothian Team turned the tables by winning the indoor event, just seven points clear of Grampian.
I hope many of the All Ranges competitors move on to take part in this summer’s events.
The STS Grand Prix, Aberdeenshire “Wapinschaw” and the Alloa Open are all coming soon, then there’s the Haig weekend and Bisley week!
I must thank the many people who helped the day to run smoothly, especially the competitors - without whom the whole exercise would have been pointless!
