This weekend saw the STS 10m Air Pistol and Rifle Championships at the University of Strathclyde. It was STS’s inaugural combined event and attracted a good range of competitors coming from as far away as the Isle of Wight, all of whom deemed it to be a success.
Saturday had two mixed relays and then Men’s and Ladies finals. Alan Goodall and Caroline Brownlie won the Pistol Finals and James Paterson and Jemma Toms came out top for the Rifle Finals. These two finals were run in conjunction with Junior finals, again for both disciplines. Kerstin Dodd and Aedan Evans claimed the Pistol Junior Finals and Vicky Walls and Jacob Hill were victorious in Rifle Junior Finals.
Sunday had the two qualifying relays of the Senior Championships which were keenly competed for. Waldek Mickiewicz with a 572 and Caroline Brownlie with a 370 were the highest qualifiers in Pistol competitions. In Rifle, James Paterson with a 616.2 and Sharon Lee with a 406.1 were the highest qualifiers. In rifle the highest qualifiers continued their form to take the Open Men and Open Women’s titles respectively. The pistol finals were lively with the top three men jostling for the title, with David Owen coming out on top by 1.4 points from Waldek Mickiewicz. In the Women’s Championship, thirteen year old Emilia Faulkner, a Scottish tetrathlete, and Caroline Brownlie yo-yoed in and out of first place, with Emilia finishing off, taking the title by a mere 0.3 points.
The organisers would like to express our thanks to the staff at the University of Strathclyde Sports and Recreation Centre, as well as to Hugh Webber, Robert Warnes and Colin Watson. Huge thanks also go to Tim Liddon, Morag Liddon, Gavin Walker and other members from the Pistol and Gallery Rifle AMG for all their work in setting up the event.
