The Al Ain World Shooting Para Sport World Cup 2018 took place over the last week and there was a fantastic Gold Medal for Scotland’s Allan Ritchie. Mike Drever also performed well, finishing one place off a medal position in the Para Trap with a fourth spot finish.
Allan’s qualification round score was phenomenal. He hit a 110/125, which set a new world record joint with Scottie Brydon of Australia. It means the performance also sets a new European record and British record.
Speaking after the result, Allan said: “Winning gold is an amazing feeling, especially after the poor start I had over the first 15 targets. It justifies all the time taken training and embedding solid process and mental conditioning, without this to fall back on I would have probably not medalled at all.
"The previous World Record for qualification was held by GB’s Matthew Goodwin, 104/125. Beating this and setting a new joint World Record of 110/125 with Australia’s Scottie Brydon is somewhat surreal. It’s not really sunk in yet.
"The quality of para Olympic Trap is growing, averages are ever increasing so I fully expect this to be broken at either the next World Cup in France, or the World Championships in Italy this year. Hopefully I’ll be one of the athletes competing for it."
